OPINION: New year, new you. Right, Squamish?

January 2021 is at our doorstep and many of us are thinking about our New Year’s resolutions, as usual. The difference this year is that the excuse to not do anything at all already exists.

There is nothing that can't be learned online this year — from exercise to art to languages, says our columnist.

January 2021 is at our doorstep and many of us are thinking about our New Year’s resolutions, as usual. The difference this year is that the excuse to not do anything at all already exists. Or does it? Yes, most things are closed, but if nothing else, 2020 has meant the world has gone virtual.

Online fitness classes, free online language exchanges, to online you-name-it are all available in abundance now.

There are many great local gyms that now offer online training and fitness classes. You don’t even need equipment. And now your coach or yoga instructor doesn’t even have to be located in the same town as you because, thanks to a stable internet connection, you can choose from coaches from across the country and even from around the world.

On the BC Recreation and Parks Association website, for example, you can find a ton of virtual fitness classes led by a variety of registered and diverse fitness leaders.

There’s classes from cardio and body conditioning to Pilates and yoga. and even fitness classes for postnatal parents.

So, from the comfort of your home, you can get those six-pack abs this year — after drinking that thousand six-packs in 2020.

Or you can, for real this time, finally start practising your high school French that you want to improve so badly.

Mary Leighton, a director at Language Partners BC, told The Chief that moving online because of COVID-19 improved attendance in the company’s classes and that language learners really liked it.

“Having it online and in your own home does have a convenience to it,” said Leighton.

[Language Partners BC is a volunteer-run organization for British Columbians to learn and teach languages for free with each other.]

If there is a silver lining to this year, it’s that there really is no excuse to not reach  your goals and pursue your goals.

It may be difficult, but that is why we set New Year’s resolutions in the first place — to help ourselves with taking that first step.

It may not always be in the ideal format that you would have imagined or would have liked, but maybe 2021 is the year you start something new.
