A civic report notes the school district is amenable to allowing Urban Recreation Ltd. to install four beach volleyball courts on their lands, providing the city oversees the installation and manages the amenity.

Beach volleyball will be coming to Ladner.

City council on Monday will consider giving the go-ahead for a licence agreement with the school district as well as enter into a separate agreement with Urban Recreation Ltd. for the installation and maintenance of four courts at Delta Secondary. The school board approval was still required.

Last fall, council granted preliminary approval to install the beach volleyball courts at the high school at the company’s cost, which is estimated at $40,000.

The city was approached by Urban Recreation Ltd., which has beach volleyball courts at other locations in the Lower Mainland and operates a volleyball league.

Delta staff reviewed possible locations and determined the most suitable would be at DSS.

The area is located south of Memorial Park on school district property, where a small backstop currently exists.

The courts will be available to the district during regular school hours (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) on school days during the school year.

To pay $1 per year, Urban Recreation Ltd. will have access to the courts for recreational league play four nights per week, from April 1 to Sept. 30 each year.

All other times the courts will be available for public use.

The company will perform all repairs and maintenance.

The district would provide the city use of the courts for a minimum of three years with an option to extend the use for two additional years.
