Ten bikes and one bicycle trailer were reported stolen within 24 hours in Victoria this week.

“There’s been a higher reported number than seen in previous weeks and months,” said Victoria police Const. Matt Rutherford.

The bikes were reported stolen from neighbourhoods across the city between Monday and Wednesday. The bike trailer was taken from a backyard, Rutherford said.

“None of them have been recovered,” he said.

There is nothing to indicate that the thefts are linked, and no common mode of theft or type of bike stolen, according to Rutherford.

Overall, reports of bike thefts in Victoria are down compared with last year.

Police statistics show there were 431 bike thefts reported from Jan. 1 to Aug. 21, down from 455 in the same period in 2018.

Police are reminding bicycle owners to lock their bikes with heavy-duty locks and, when possible, take them inside. Bikes left in garages, sheds or storage lockers should be secured and checked regularly.

Victoria police have a free bike registry, and cyclists who ride in Victoria or Esquimalt are encouraged to register their bikes.

Rutherford said police recover a lot of stolen bikes but that it’s difficult to reunite them with owners if they aren’t registered and don’t have serial numbers or identifying markings.
