Whitecaps trounce Co-op in women's soccer

Peninsula Co-op Highlanders saw the future Monday. And her name is Summer Clarke.

Clarke scored three goals to lead the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 4-0 victory over the Co-op Highlanders (1-1) in Pacific Coast Soccer League women’s action on the Lower Mainland.

“[Clarke] is definitely the heir apparent to [Canadian national team captain and Olympic-medallist] Christina Sinclair,” said Co-op Highlanders head coach Dave Dew.

“She strikes the ball very accurately from a distance, from outside the box and with her left foot.”

Dew was not as happy with his players.

“Our first half was poor,” he said.

“We didn’t come to compete.”

Peninsula Co-op got some good minutes from substitutes Kristen Livingstone, Abby Rhaymer, Maryse Reichgeld, Emily Stenerson and Sam Lee in the second half.

“We’re going to go back to working on the first touch, our decision-making and our competition level,” said Dew.

The Co-op Highlanders FC face Okanagan FC and Kamloops on Saturday and Sunday.
