The University of Victoria Vikes will have a familiar foe — one they split the regular-season series against — awaiting them this week in the Canada West women’s basketball playoff quarter-finals.

The Vikes are set to travel to the Prairies for the best-of-three series beginning Thursday night against the University of Regina Cougars. The series continues Friday and, if needed, Saturday.

This is the sixth consecutive season UVic has advanced to the quarter-final stage of the playoffs.

The Vikes were 12-8 in the regular season and defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 80-61 in the single-loss elimination first-round conference playoff game over the weekend at CARSA gym.

The Cougars were 17-3 in the regular season and received a first-round playoff bye. Regina is ranked No. 6 in the U Sports national top-10 poll.

The Cougars and unranked Vikes split their regular-season series 1-1 in January on Ken and Kathy Shields Court at CARSA gym. The Cougars demolished the Vikes 85-50 in the first game before UVic rallied for a last-basket 70-69 victory the next night.

The Vikes men’s basketball team, meanwhile, was eliminated from the Canada West playoffs over the weekend with the 95-68 first-round loss to the host University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
