Victoria Shamrocks take Gurney in first round of WLA draft

The Victoria Shamrocks, picking sixth, selected Justyn Gurney of Delta in the first round of the Western Lacrosse Association draft held Thursday night at the Langley Events Centre.

The Victoria Shamrocks, picking sixth, selected Justyn Gurney of Delta in the first round of the Western Lacrosse Association draft held Thursday night at the Langley Events Centre. Gurney, 21, also played in the Western Hockey League for the Everett Silvertips.

The Naniamo Timbermen, selecting second and fifth overall, respectively took Ari Stevens from Saanich and Skylar Wilson. Wilson is from Victoria and plays field lacrosse in the Ivy League for Yale. The top overall selection, by the Maple Ridge Burrards, was Cole Catton out of the New Westminster Junior Salmonbellies. Tyler Ewen of Surrey and NCAA Queens University of Charlotte went third overall to the Burnaby Lakers, Brandon Balewicz fourth to the Coquitlam Adanacs and Aidan Guld of Burnaby seventh overall to the Adanacs, who had two first-round picks.

There was also a compensatory and protected portion of the draft in which the Shamrocks took Victoria-product Liam Phillips from Fort Worth/Panther City of the pro National Lacrosse League and the Timbermen selected Mark Yingling from the Delta Islanders junior team.
