Vancouver Island Football Club starts to build roster for soccer league

The Vancouver Island Football Club has signed its first three players to the club’s inaugural roster in the Women’s Premier Soccer League.

The Vancouver Island Football Club has signed its first three players to the club’s inaugural roster in the Women’s Premier Soccer League.

Alexis McKinty, Liz Gregg and Mariel Solsberg were selected to the roster by coaches Neil Sedgwick and Wes Barrett.

Gregg is from Cortez Island and played for the University of Victoria Vikes before starting her professional career with the Coco Expos in Florida and later with England’s Doncaster Rovers Belles from 2007 to 2009.

Midfielder McKinty, played in U Sports with Queen’s from 2009 to 2014. She is a talented midfielder who brings speed and skill to the VIFC.

“I think that having experienced high-pressure, high- stakes games in my collegiate career will help me rise to the challenge of facing some quality opponents in the WPSL,” McKinty said.

Former UVic Vikes star Solsberg played professionally in Denmark for Fortuna Hjorring and Sonderjysk from 2006 to 2008. “I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to play for Vancouver Island FC and contribute to the growth of female soccer in our community,” she said.

Vancouver Island FC begins its first WPSL season next month against opponents that include the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers.
