UVic Vikes rally to edge Regina Cougars in Canada West men's basketball

UVic Vikes 82, Regina Cougars 78 in Jan. 6, 2023 game

The U Sports nationally third-ranked University of Victoria Vikes survived a scare by rallying to beat the Regina Cougars 82-78 in Canada West men’s basketball action ­Friday night in the Saskatchewan capital. The Vikes trailed heading into the fourth quarter before outscoring the Cougars 28-15 in the final stanza to pull out the victory.

UVic moved to 9-2 in conference while the Cougars fell to 5-4. Third-year shooting-guard Diego Maffia led the Vikes with 28 points while freshman Renaldo Robinson added 24 points and sophomore Elias Ralph 10.

Meanwhile, Ashlyn Day of UVic scored a game-high 30 points but it wasn’t enough as the Vikes women’s team (4-7) fell 89-63 to the Canada West-leading Regina Cougars (8-1).

The UVic men’s and women’s teams meet their Cougars counterparts again tonight in Regina.

The Vikes squads return to CARSA Gymnasium next weekend to host their University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves counterparts in Canada West play.
