Ultimate Canadian title up for grabs

The Canadian Ultimate Frisbee Championships run today through Sunday with more than 70 teams in five divisions - open, women, mixed, juniors and masters (over-33).

Action runs from 8: 30 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m. today through Saturday. Finals are Sunday starting at 9: 30 a.m. at Royal Athletic Park.

The Canadian junior field hockey teams head to Mexico early next month for the Pan American Junior Championships, and both the men's and women's teams will have a UVic flavour to them.

The national junior men's team will have four current Vikes and one former Vike on the squad as they try to qualify for the 2013 Junior World Cup. Current Vikes Brendan Bissett, Sam Jones, James Kirkpatrick and Matthew Sarmento have played large roles on the national junior team leading up to Pan Ams. As has former Vike Keegan Pereira.

On the women's side, UVic's Kathleen Leahy has returned from a knee injury and locked up a spot on the national junior team.

The Pan Am tournament runs Sept. 10-23 in Guadalajara. The top two men's and women's teams qualify for the 2013 Junior World Cup.

The Victoria United Under-21 soccer team had a good regular season, but in the playoffs, they took it up a notch.

United won the Pacific Coast Soccer League U-21 Challenge Cup last weekend in Chilliwack, beating the host team 3-1 in the final.

Michael Baart, a St. Michaels University School student, led the way for Victoria scoring twice, while Nils Webber added the single.

United finished second to Kamloops in the regular season but Chilliwack eliminated the regular-season champs in the semifinals. In Victoria's semifinal, Jared Atchison scored a last-minute goal to pace United to a 3-2 win over West Vancouver.

United goalie Ryan Hulstein was named tournament MVP.

Victoria runner Adam Campbell continues to have success on the Ultra circuit.

Campbell won the halfmarathon (21 kilometres) portion of the Arc'teryx Squamish 50 last weekend thanks to a time of 1 hour, 53 minutes, 51 seconds. The Squamish Ultra race is ran along trails and climbs to elevations near 10,000 feet.

With a heavy Esquimalt flavour, the Victoria Wildcats cruised to the peewee single-A provincial title last weekend in Kelowna.

The Wildcats were a perfect 6-0 at the tournament, including a 15-2 win against the crosstown rivals Victoria Tigers in the gold-medal game. Alec Mayer led the Wildcats offence in the final with a home run.

In the semifinals, the Wildcats got a seven-RBI game from Graham Dube en route to a 14-2 win over the Comox Cardinals.

With 10 players from Esquimalt, one from Gordon Head and one from Layritz, the Wildcats capped off a season which saw them win the Island and B.C. titles and go 18-0 in tournament play.
