ATHENS, Greece - Greek league leader Olympiakos has dismissed coach Leonardo Jardim.
A terse statement from the club on Saturday announced Jardim's dismissal and thanked him for his services. It added that assistant coach Antonis Nikopolidis, a former goalkeeper for the team, will coach Olympiakos in Sunday's home league game against Giannena.
Defending champion Olympiakos is 10 points ahead of second-place PAOK with 13 rounds to play. Its path to the championship has been easier than in recent years because perennial contenders Panathinaikos and AEK are having their worst seasons ever in the league. However, fans have not been satisfied with the team's play, and home attendance is markedly down on last year's.
Jardim was signed to a two-year contract in June 2012 but, from the start, could not match the popularity of his predecessor, Ernesto Valverde.
