Names and Games: National bronze for UVic Vikes golfers

The University of Victoria Vikes golf teams had some impressive showings at the recent Canadian University/College Golf Championships in Komoka, Ont., but that still wasn’t good enough to dethrone the UBC Thunderbirds.

The University of Victoria Vikes golf teams had some impressive showings at the recent Canadian University/College Golf Championships in Komoka, Ont., but that still wasn’t good enough to dethrone the UBC Thunderbirds.

On the women’s side, Vikes rookie Sukriti Jarjai shot a final-round 75 to finish third overall in the individual standings and help the Vikes earn the bronze medal in the team event. Jarjai was three shots back of individual gold medallist Sarah Dunning of Guelph. UBC’s Shania Remandaban was second, helping the T-Birds win their fourth straight national women’s title, this time edging out Laval.

Also having a strong tournament for the Vikes was senior Nicole Gargarella, who finished in fifth place with rounds of 79, 76, 77 and 79.

In the men’s event, UVic also finished third behind the fourth-place individual ranking of Robin Conlan thanks to rounds of 76, 68, 68 and 70 at Firerock Golf Course.

UVic’s John Morrow wound up 14th with rounds of 75, 75, 70 and 69.

UBC won the team event.

Claremont golfers golden at B.C.s

Claremont Secondary has one more banner to hang in the gym this year, and they can thank the Spartans golf team.

Claremont won the gold medal at this week’s B.C. Triple-A Golf Championships at Squamish Valley Golf and Country Club. The Spartans, led by individual bronze medallist Willie Bishop, who recorded two rounds of 72, beat Vancouver College by six strokes. St. George’s was third, with Nanaimo’s Dover Bay finishing sixth.

Conner Watson (76, 73), Chase Basanta (79, 72), Michael Wu (80, 72) and Richard Zhang (79, 75) rounded out the Claremont squad.

Reaume’s truck back on track

Victoria’s Josh Reaume will be back behind the wheel of his Chevrolet Silverado this weekend, taking part in his seventh NASCAR Gander World Truck Series event of the season.

The 28-year-old from the West Shore will be at Texas Motor Speedway for tonight’s race. Reaume’s best finish this season was sixth-place in the season opener at Daytona Speedway.

Okell heats up in California

Bill Okell celebrated his recent induction to the Victoria Auto Racing Hall of Fame in style by picking up a pair of wins last weekend on the Sports Car Club of America circuit.

Okell picked up two NASPORT victories at Laguna Raceway on the Monterey Peninsula.

Braves’ coach jumps to BCHL

The Saanich Braves of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League are in need of a new head coach.

The club announced Wednesday that Sam Waterfield is headed to the B.C. Hockey League to become an assistant coach with the Coquitlam Express. Last season under Waterfield, the Braves finished third in the South Division with a 21-17-4-6 record.

Batter up for Doug Hudlin Day

It’s a game that would have made Doug Hudlin proud, and that’s the whole point.

The Victoria HarbourCats are helping commemorate Doug Hudlin Day on Saturday by hosting a charity ball game between the Hudlin family and the Fernwood Ballgetters. The game will begin at noon and help raise funds for Victoria Special Olympics.

Donations are accepted at the gate and there will be special activities for the kids.

Hudlin, who died in 2014 at 91, was the first Canadian to umpire at the Little League World Series.
