Led by the U-16 boys team winning their third straight provincial title, the Vancouver Island Wave program had a big weekend at the B.C. finals.

The U-16 boys, coached by former Highlanders Riley O’Neill and Blair Sturrock, broke open a 0-0 game with two second-half goals from Tory Borbon and Jack Napier Gannley to defeat Coastal FC 2-0 in the final.

The Wave U-15 boys, coached by Victor Ferreira, also captured the gold medal in Surrey, edging Fraser Valley Premier 1-0 in the final.

The two Island teams will represent B.C. at the Canada Soccer National Championships in October in Edmonton.

It’s Miller time at Cordova Bay

Some of the top amateur golfers in the Pacific Northwest are doing battle at the 2019 RBC Cordova Bay Invitational, and UVic Vikes star Josh Miller is in total control.

Miller shot 10-under 61 on Wednesday to take a seven-shot lead into today’s final round of the three-round event. Miller leads a pair of Oregon State Beavers as NCAA freshmen Keaton Gudz shot rounds of 67 and 69, while Nolan Thoroughgood put up scores of 72 and 66. Royal Colwood’s Kevin Carrigan is in fourth place after rounds of 67 and 71.

Hammer thrower Willett on the rise

Victoria’s Sam Willett continues to climb the national track and field ladder and now he’ll get a taste of international competition.

Willett has been named to the Canadian team for next week’s North American, Central American and Caribbean Track and Field Championships in Queretaro, Mexico.

Willett will compete in the U-23 hammer throw event.

Willett is hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Lambrick Park grad Adam Keenan, who recently became the second longest hammer thrower in Canadian history when he threw 74 metres in a competition in Germany. Keenan just graduated from Northern Arizona University and has moved to the pro circuit.

Lakehill Minors hitting stride

The Lakehill Little League minor (8-10-year-olds) squad is rolling heading into the district championship tournament.

Lakehill defeated Layritz 4-1 in Sunday’s city championship game to cap off a perfect season that saw them finish 22-0. Lakehill finished the city tournament 4-0, while giving up just two runs.

Next up is the District 7 tournament, which begins Saturday at Beacon Hill. The district win advances to the provincial championship tournament July 13-21 in South Vancouver.

Price is right at Skagit Speedway

A trip across the water proved well worth it for Cobble Hill race car driver Robbie Price.

Price captured the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup last weekend at Skagit Speedway and the $15,000 US top prize.

The finale ended with a dream finish for Price as he bested Blake Hahn by .364 seconds for his first career Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour victory. With the victory, Price became the first Canadian driver to win the Skagit Speedway crown jewel and the youngest winner ever of the event at 21-years-old.

Rugby Bears ready to growl

B.C. Rugby has announced its all-star team for the upcoming Best of the West matches against the Prairie Wolfpack and the Bears squad has a heavy Island flavour to it.

The two matches will played Saturday night in Red Deer and July 27 at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna.
