Participants approach the finish line of the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon 8K in Victoria last October.

It’s 40 for 40 for the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon.

It has joined a select list of worldwide races as an Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda age-group qualifying event. This provides the fastest runners age 40 and older the opportunity to qualify for the AbbottWMM Wanda age group world championships.

The 40th anniversary Victoria race will take place Oct. 13, which coincides with the opening day of the qualifying cycle, and will end on the same weekend of the following Victoria race on Oct. 11, 2020.

The one-year cycle gives participants the chance to earn more than one qualifying time for the world championships that will be held in the spring of 2021, with the location to be announced next year.

Other qualifying races include the most prestigious marathons in the world — including the Boston, New York, Chicago, London, Berlin and Tokyo marathons.

“We are very proud that the Victoria marathon will be showcased with other events from around the world,” said Cathy Noel, GM of the Victoria race.

“We know we are a world-class event, and hope our association with the Abbott Marathon Majors will attract returning and new participants to Vancouver Island.”

The Victoria event is already a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
