Golfers chase Canadian mid-amateur title at Victoria Golf Club

Six past champions will be looking for a return to glory when the 2018 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Golf Championship tees off today at Victoria Golf Club.

Six past champions will be looking for a return to glory when the 2018 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Golf Championship tees off today at Victoria Golf Club.

The list of past champions competing this week includes Kevin Carrigan of Royal Colwood, who won back-to-back national mid-amateur championships in 2012 and 2013.

Also in the mix is three-time champion Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont., who is a National Hockey League referee.

Going for his record eighth national title is 71-year-old Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que.

Island hopefuls include Carrigan, Peter Jawl, Saare Adams, Jordan Caron, Craig Doell, Ken Rowan, Paul Hansen, Phil Kondrak, Erik Swinburnson, Jonathan Siska, Mac Keats and Eric Smith, all of Victoria, veteran Sandy Harper of Nanaimo, Greg Koster of Courtenay, Brent Wilson of Cobble Hill and Kyler Bourgeault of Qualicum Beach.

The mid-amateur category is for amateur golfers age 25 and older.

The first round today begins at 7:30 a.m., with tee times to 2:42 p.m. The four-round tournament runs to Friday at Victoria Golf Club.
