Golden Bears best UVic Vikes in Canada West hoops

The University of Alberta Golden Bears defeated both the UVic Vikes men's and women's basketball teams in Edmonton on Saturday.

The University of Alberta Golden Bears answered back Saturday night in their marquee Canada West men’s basketball set against the University of Victoria Vikes.

The Golden Bears (3-3) defeated UVic 89-84 in Edmonton after the Vikes won 92-71 on Friday night.

UVic (4-2) is the third-ranked team in the U Sports national top-10 poll and the Golden Bears are ranked No. 5 behind the top-ranked Carleton Ravens and second-ranked University of Ottawa Gee Gees. The Brock Badgers are No. 4.

Diego Maffia led UVic with 21 points Saturday while Elias Ralph scored 17 and Trent Monkman 11 in a reprise of last year’s Canada West playoff final won by the Vikes. Rookies Izzy Helman and Renoldo Robinson scored 10 points each.

Alberta (5-1) defeated UVic (2-4) 73-50 in the earlier Canada West women’s game in Edmonton. Kate Johnson led the Vikes with 16 points while Ashlyn Day, who led Canada West with a 34.0 points-per-game scoring average going into the weekend, added 14 points.

The Vikes teams return home to face the Trinity Western Spartans next Friday and Saturday at CARSA Gym.
