COVID sidelines Rockets for 14 days; 2 Victoria Royals games postponed

The B.C. Division of the Western Hockey League has been thrown into disarray by COVID-19.

The B.C. Division of the Western Hockey League has been thrown into disarray by COVID-19.

The Victoria Royals’ scheduled game Saturday against Kelowna has been postponed after the WHL announced the suspension of team activities for the Rockets for a minimum of 14 days through April 14. That followed six positive COVID-19 tests Wednesday among four Kelowna players and two team staff members. There was one positive test among a Kelowna staff member Tuesday. The league said all other test results from the B.C. Division hubs in Kamloops and Kelowna came back negative. Each team will play 24 games in the abbreviated season.

Nine Kelowna games have been postponed. They include the Saturday game against Victoria and another against the Royals on April 12. Also postponed, out of caution, was Wednesday night’s Vancouver-Prince George game.

“It’s about adaptability and that’s an important skill for players to learn,” said Royals GM and head coach Dan Price, about facing the situation.

“The landscape has changed. It’s about who adapts best to it.”
