Basketball: Matthew Ellis scores winner for UVic Vikes

Matthew Ellis’ 21 points led the University of Victoria Vikes (6-2 in conference) to a 95-93 Canada West men’s basketball victory in overtime against the Mount Royal Cougars (3-5) on Saturday in Calgary.

Ellis scored a jumper to win it for UVic in OT as the Vikes swept the two-game Canada West set in Cow Town. Hayden Lejeune scored 20 points for the Vikes and Jason Scully 19.

In Canada West women’s action, the UVic Vikes (6-2) rebounded from Friday night’s two-point upset loss against Mount Royal to beat the Cougars 73-60 on Saturday, also in Calgary.

The Vikes, an honourable mention in the weekly national U Sports top-10 poll, got 19 points from Ashlyn Day, 14 from Morgan Roskelley and 12 from Calli McMillan.

The Cougars fell to 3-5 in conference.
