When you are using Twitter to beat up on the Times Colonist, how can you be sure your message is being delivered to the right people?

After all, among the things Twitter is known for, fake accounts is one.

Well, earlier this month, Twitter bestowed @timescolonist with its coveted blue check mark of verification. You can see it next to our name in the image at the top of this post.

How did we achieve such a high honour?

“Twitter verifies accounts on an ongoing basis to make it easier for users to find who they're looking for. We concentrate on highly sought users in music, acting, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, business, and other key interest areas. We are constantly updating our requirements for verification. Note, verification does not factor in follower count or Tweet count.”

In short, it's a bit of a mystery. But @timescolonist has been on Twitter for more than six years. We've never been hacked, we post regularly and our account is directly linked to our website. All good for verification.

We also have a lot of followers (nearly 32,000), although Twitter says that's not a factor. (wink, wink)

Whatever the criteria, it is simply further proof that @timescolonist is the Times Colonist and there are real people behind the handle.

Merry Christmas.
