The Canadian junior hockey team led us to a bit of controversy last week, but not because they failed to deliver a gold medal to a hockey-obsessed country.

It turns out we rubbed one or two readers the wrong way by posting scores of preliminary games to Facebook before they had a chance to watch PVRed games.

The issue was debated behind the scenes until one of our editors posed the question on Facebook.

It seems that most of the 27 comments on the topic agreed that news is news — even when it's sports — and there's no holding it back. We were encouraged to post results as they come available.

And we will.

It was a worthwhile discussion to have with the Winter Olympics now less than a month away and many events taking place while BCers sleep. We had always planned to post immediate results and see no new reason to change course.

So let this be your spoiler alert.

The commenting debate

I have tried once or twice to delve into the debate about commenting online and what's allowed and what isn't.

We have recently taken a firmer hand in weeding out those comments that are off topic. We want you to discuss the issue at hand, not squabble with each other.

As an example, it's the difference between exchange No. 1:

"I don't like it."

"I don't like it either."

And exchange No. 2:

"I don't like it."

"I don't like you."

No. 1 is good. No. 2 is going to get you deleted.

Stay on topic (and refrain from potty mouth) and you'll have no problems.

While we're on the topic of dos and don'ts in sharing your opinion, this column from editorial writer David Bly is applicable across all platforms.
