Facts are essential steps on the learning ladder

Re: "Education still requires facts," Sept. 8. Let me add my voice to the opinions expressed in this editorial. My first thought was, "Oh Lord, the Year 2000 self-esteem curriculum people are at it again.

Lunney once railed against MP pensions

Re: "Tax group's billboards target MP pensions," Sept. 7. I remember when James Lunney was a member of the Reform Party and was in Ottawa railing against the MP pensions.

Research costs good investment

Cherish those photos of our closest planetary neighbour that the Mars rover Curiosity is beaming back to Earth - the mission to Mars comes with a $2.5-billion price tag. The likelihood of an immediate and favourable return on investment is small.

Wage-cost cycle seems endless

Farm workers want more money because of the increase in the cost of living. The farmer pays it to them but to cover this must raise the price of milk and produce. This increases the cost of living, so the farm workers again want more money.

Organ donations should be automatic

In speaking with an old friend recently, the subject of organ donations came up and he expressed an idea that I must agree with. He feels that signing a donor card is the wrong way to go.

Don't blame cougars without investigation

The recent rash of livestock killed in Central Saanich makes me question if cougars are really responsible. Conservation officers have concluded that these animals were indeed killed by cougars because cougar tracks were found near them.

It's time for a quick test. Go back, way back, and think of one teacher who inspired you. Who changed your life. Who set you on the right course. Or who made learning fun. All of us can usually think of one teacher who stands apart from the rest.
