Just when Christy Clark's Liberals were enjoying a small upward tick in the polls, another political landmine has exploded. Finance Minister Mike de Jong is admitting the government's plan to balance the budget next year is in real jeopardy.

My wife has been working for the summer as a kayaking guide at Discovery Islands Lodge on Quadra Island. Kayaking is her love/obsession.

Re: "International delegations benefit all Victorians," Sept. 20. Tom Roemer is correct about the value of these trips, and Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin is an excellent person to represent the area.

I have served my country in the Canadian Armed Forces for more than 25 years. I have been deployed to the Middle East and have spent many long and hot months away from family and friends while being overseas completing tours in the Arabian Gulf.

Last week was Democracy Week in Canada, and it is great that we are discussing democracy and proportional representation on the letters page.

If you don't do the work, should you get credit for it? Most sensible people think not, including Lynden Dorval, the Edmonton physics teacher who created a furor by giving zeros to students who didn't hand in assignments.

Young people are disengaged from civic life. What can be done?
