Someone should define affordable

Thanks to Chris Lefevre (a developer, no less) for his timely reality check into the spate of announcements about government-funded rental housing increases.

Someone needs to ask our government: What is affordable for the taxpayer? A classic case is the Oak Bay United Church’s proposal for a 98-apartment development on their small piece of excess land.

At their recent open house, we learned that they will need to blast through two storeys of solid granite for church and some tenant underground parking, the cost of which is expected to be $5 million to $7 million.

And this is affordable?
