Regional government costs are misleading

Re: “$2.2 million,” July 29.

I object to the statistical reporting in the article. The region might indeed be paying the total amount indicated in the article, but each individual property taxpayer pays only for his/her municipality, plus the ever-growing and largely unneeded Capital Regional District.

It therefore becomes a fallacious argument to compare the regional tax burden and executive compensation packages with a municipality the size of our entire region. Can we please stick to comparing apples to apples?

I do agree with getting a grip on compensation packages, and we also need to stop growing the various bureaucracies in each of our own municipalities. Taxpayers could learn from the lesson indicated by Mayor John Ranns in the article as one way of curbing costs.
