Municipalities should curb noisy motorcycles

Cheers for Dr. Trevor Hancock and his article on noise pollution.

“Surely we have a right to a quiet community where we can … sit out … in the garden — without being driven away or indoors by noise.” But apparently not. On beautiful weekends in the summer, even in a semi-rural area such as Maple Bay, the quiet is shattered by caravans of motorcycles, all mufflers removed, sometimes replaced by noise-enhancers, roaring down to the sea. Why is this allowed? Why cannot the earsplitting noise of these machines be regulated, and violators fined for their devil-may-care attitude toward the peace of others?

Why can’t the newly elected municipal councils address what their forbears have neglected, the enactment of bylaws “to make our cities quieter and healthier places to live, something we all need and, indeed, should have a right to.”
