Many would dump British connections

Re: “Brits want to be treated better in B.C.,” letter, Oct. 28

The letter-writer expressed his displeasure with the “20 per cent foreign buyers tax” he had to pay for buying a home in B.C.

His unhappiness is spurred by the fact that if the shoe were on the other foot, Canadians would not be treated the same way if they bought a house in England.

He states: “You use the English language and the Union Jack on your provincial flag. You also have the Queen on your currency. How would you feel if Brits tried to tax you for that privilege?”

Well, it might surprise him that a lot of Canadians would welcome such a tax. If the tax were implemented, the result would be similar to the Boston Tea Party in the U.S., when the Americans said enough is enough and dumped the monarchy. We could call it the Canadian tea party, and in so doing we could dump the positions of governor general, the 12 lieutenant governors and their expensive entourages overboard.

The money saved from dumping the “privilege” would be better spent for such things as improving the living conditions for Indigenous people on reserves than on useless pompous monarch-representative positions that contribute zip to Canada.
