Re: “Pipeline supplies us with our gasoline,” letter, March 21.
The letter-writer states that “Kinder Morgan has a perfect safety record for more that 30 years.” A quick search on Google provided evidence to the contrary. According to Sacred Trust, Kinder Morgan has not operated for longer than about four years without a spill since the 1960s. In B.C. alone, there have been five significant spills.
• June 4, 2007 — 69,950 litres of crude oil was spilled at Wahleach pump station.
• July 24, 2007 — 250,000 litres of crude oil spilled out of a pipeline in Burnaby into storm sewers and ditches before entering Burrard Inlet.
• May 6, 2009 — an estimated 200,000 liters of crude oil leaked from a Kinder Morgan storage facility in Burnaby.
• Jan. 24, 2012 — an estimated 110,000 litres of crude oil leaked from Kinder Morgan’s storage facility on Sumas Mountain in Abbotsford.
Kinder Morgan’s record is far from perfect.
