April 25: Road changes will ruin life in Sooke

Well, it’s time to move away from Sooke. The proposed road changes around the 17-Mile Pub, which include a signal at Gillespie Road and more shoulder space to “allow police to set up speed traps” — can you believe they actually admit to this? — will make traffic slower, more crowded and effectively turn Sooke and communities west of Sooke into another suburb of Victoria.

Let’s talk about the trees that will be cut down or the two-plus years of traffic mess while the construction takes place.

I venture to guess that many of us in Sooke didn’t move out here to have this experience. The whole flavour of this part of Vancouver Island will change and not necessarily for the better — unless you like traffic jams, road rage, strip malls and an hour-and-a-half drive to Victoria or parts north.

And were there any formal community reviews of this debacle? Thanks a lot, Premier John Horgan. Thanks a lot, Sooke Mayor Maja Tait.
