April 10: We have shortage of competition, not gas

Re: “B.C. will consider relief on gas prices,” April 5. Shortage, shmortage! There’s no shortage of gasoline. I see no service stations with “Sorry, No Gas” signs on their pumps.

Shortage, shmortage! There’s no shortage of gasoline. I see no service stations with “Sorry, No Gas” signs on their pumps.

There is, however, sometimes a shortage of competition between the refineries. If there’s no alternative to where distributors buy their product, the price goes up. Simple “whatever the market will bear” philosophy.

The only way to counteract these usurious swings is to have more Canadian refining capacity. We don’t have to be at the mercy of Washington state refineries. Let’s get busy and stop selling them crude oil at fire-sale prices and then be thanked by being gouged when we buy back gasoline to keep our economy running.
