University of Victoria professor Murray Rankin will represent the NDP in a federal byelection in Victoria after easily winning the nomination from party members Sunday afternoon.
The selection confirms candidates for at least three federal parties as all wait for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to call a byelection for the Victoria riding that opened up when NDP MP Denise Savoie retired in August.
Rankin beat out three other hopefuls on the first ballot, picking up 352 of the possible 557 eligible voters who attended the NDP nomination meeting on campus at UVic.
Rankin was up against former provincial finance and health minster Elizabeth Cull, former Victoria school board trustee Charley Beresford and first-term Victoria councillor Ben Isitt.
The Liberal Party selected economist Paul Summerville as its candidate on Saturday. The Green Party will go with UVic law professor Donald Galloway, an advocate of refugee and immigrant rights in Canada.
The Conservative nomination meeting is set for Oct. 20 with former Nova Scotia MLA Patrick Hunt expected to put his name forward.
