Victoria police are looking for a suspect after a woman allegedly struck a five-year-old boy on a downtown street.

A mother and her three children were walking on Government Street, near Herald Street, about 11:20 a.m. Monday when an unknown woman struck one of the children in the face without provocation, police said. The incident happened on the child’s fifth birthday.

The mother and children quickly left the area and contacted police. Officers conducted a search but the woman wasn’t found.

The woman is described as white, 30 to 40 years old, about five-foot-five with a slim build, and disheveled. She had shoulder-length brownish-blond hair and was wearing light-coloured jeans and carrying a brown leather bag.

Police ask anyone with information to call them at 250-995-7654, extension 1, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
