The Independent Investigations Office had to determine whether the officer used excessive force when he kneed the man in the shoulder and head area and whether this caused a facial fracture which required surgery.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is looking into an incident in which a woman sustained a fracture while being arrested by West Shore RCMP for public intoxication and fraud.

The IIO is a civilian-oversight agency that investigates police-related incidents resulting in serious harm or death.

RCMP said the incident happened after 9 p.m. Wednesday, when a taxi driver drove a woman to the West Shore detachment because she wouldn’t pay her fare.

The female was arrested for public intoxication and fraud, and was injured in the process.

Paramedics took her to hospital, where a fracture was confirmed.

The IIO will determine what role, if any, officers played in causing the injury.
