A 75-year-old woman was plucked from the waters of Cowichan Lake on Friday after the boat she was in overturned.

Lake Cowichan RCMP received a call about 4:45 p.m. Friday saying a pleasure craft had overturned near Caycuse, at the north end of the lake. A number of people reported seeing the woman alone in the boat several hours before the incident occurred.

Residents of Caycuse and members of the local fire department used their personal vessels to get to the woman and pull her from the water.

It’s believed the woman was in the water for close to an hour. Police said she was unresponsive when rescued. She was taken to hospital by air ambulance and is expected to recover.

“Without the quick action of the Caycuse community and their fire department this could have been a very different and possible tragic outcome,” said Sgt. Lita Watson, detachment commander of the Lake Cowichan RCMP.

Also assisting were the Lake Cowichan and Youbou fire departments, B.C. Ambulance paramedics and South Island Traffic Services. — Times Colonist
