A woman has been arrested by Victoria police after a man was attacked with a hammer.

Police were called to a supportive-housing facility in the 800 block of Johnson Street, between Blanshard and Quadra streets, about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The man had non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect had barricaded herself in a suite at the complex.

She refused to communicate with officers, so the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team, including crisis negotiators, was called in, police said.

After several hours, the team deployed loud distraction devices and the woman emerged about 9:30 p.m. She refused to comply with directions but was taken into custody after less-lethal ammunition was used by officers.

The woman was taken to hospital for a mental-health assessment and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

She has since been given a court date and released. A charge of assault with a weapon is being recommended.
