Nanaimo RCMP say a 34-year-old woman was “very lucky” she wasn’t more badly hurt after her vehicle hit a utility pole head-on early Tuesday and burst into flames.

The single-vehicle crash happened just before 1 a.m. on the Island Highway near the Country Club Centre mall, said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said.

The woman lost control of her older-model Chevrolet Blazer, he said.

“They believe there was some kind of mechanical malfunction,” O’Brien said. “She got out with relatively minor injuries.

“She was taken to hospital for precautionary measures only.”

O’Brien said there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were factors. — Times Colonist
