West Shore RCMP tasered a man and arrested him using a police dog after he was acting erratically in View Royal.

Officers were called to the pedestrian bridge near the 200-block of the Island Highway in View Royal at about 1 a.m. Monday and found a man who was visibly distraught and agitated, said West Shore RCMP spokeswoman Const. Nancy Saggar.

The man was carrying a backpack and told officers he had a syringe full of gasoline. The man had his hand in his backpack and ignored police orders to show his hands, making Mounties believe he had a weapon, Saggar said.

Officers tried to de-escalate the situation by speaking to the man, but he did not co-operate and became more aggressive as he advanced toward the officers.

Officers used a Taser to subdue the man, and a police dog was also used to take the man into custody.

Saggar said the man was “clearly displaying the potential to cause serious harm to those present and the public in the area.”

The man was arrested and taken to hospital. He was treated for injuries to his lower leg caused by the police dog.

The Independent Investigations Office, which probes police-involved serious injuries or deaths, was notified but is not investigating, Saggar said.
