An RCMP search of a Sooke cabin uncovered an assault rifle, a sawed-off shotgun, brass knuckles, illegal drugs and ammunition.

On Feb. 6, members of the Sooke RCMP assisted members of the Canadian Armed Forces military police in executing a search warrant of the cabin on Connie Road, which is off Highway 14 in Sooke.

The search was related to a break-in of a recreational vehicle compound located on CAF property on Jan. 10 in Colwood.

The compound and 18 recreational vehicles stored there were broken into and a significant amount of personal items was stolen, reported Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur.

At the cabin, a quantity of methamphetamine, an assault rifle, a sawed-off shotgun, brass knuckles, ammunition and firearm magazines were located, police said.

The majority of the stolen property that prompted the search warrant was located in and around a trailer near the cabin, reported McArthur.

Alexander Taylor, 34, is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, unsafe storage of firearms; breach of recognizance and possession of firearms while prohibited.

Other charges concerning the stolen property, firearms and methamphetamine are pending. The matter remains under investigation.

Taylor remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in provincial court on March 7.
