The Greater Victoria Teachers’ Association said many of its members will be wearing red Friday and lining the streets outside their schools.

It’s part of a National Day of Action for Public Education, organized by the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, that recognizes teachers in B.C., Ontario and Saskatchewan are dealing with labour issues, said GVTA president Winona Waldron.

She said the B.C. Teachers’ Federation is currently in contract mediation and Ontario teachers are on strike.

A variety of activities will be taking place here, Waldron said.

“Different schools have organized different actions.”

No classes will be disrupted, Waldron said.

She said she will be with teachers from Spectrum Community School and neighbouring Marigold Elementary School on the adjacent pedestrian overpass spanning the Trans-Canada Highway.

Today’s event has an important purpose, Waldron said.

“This is just part of drawing attention to public education, our concerns around public education, the funding for public school students,” she said.

“We need to keep this at the forefront.”

The day will culminate with a 3:30-4:30 p.m. rally outside Education Minister’s Rob Fleming’s Hillside Avenue office.
