Victoria firefighters responded to a small blaze at a homeless camp on the water in Rock Bay Sunday morning.

Victoria Fire Department battalion chief Gord Taylor said they received multiple 911 calls around 10:20 a.m.

Crews arrived at the waterfront area near Bridge and Bay streets to find a small fire producing heavy smoke. There was a collection of personal belongings, including sleeping bags, blankets and clothing, suggesting someone had been sleeping in the area.

“It looked like in our opinion they were trying to keep warm. There was some wood and it was a little charred,” Taylor said. “Just a small fire at night, but I think they left the area and it caught the clothing they had down there.”

No one was in the area when crews arrived, Taylor said.
