A 30-year-old man who ran away from a traffic stop didn’t get far before being arrested by Saanich police.

The vehicle he was in turned out to have been reported stolen from Colwood just 20 minutes earlier.

It began when a Saanich officer saw a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in the 3800-block of Carey Road about 2 p.m. Sunday, and pulled it over. The driver got out and asked why he had been stopped. When the officer told him it was for speeding, the man fled.

The officer followed and watched as the man ran down a dead-end stairwell nearby. More officers showed up and the man was persuaded to come up the stairs to be arrested.

In addition to being in a vehicle that was reported stolen, the man did not have a driver’s licence and was in breach of a court order.

The stolen vehicle Sunday was returned to its registered owner that day, he said.
