Water flows from a pipe after a fire hydrant was struck by a car and ripped from the ground on Richmond Road in Saanich on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020.

A Saanich resident had their backyard flooded Saturday morning after a driver hit a fire hydrant with enough force to rip it out of the ground.

Saanich police said witnesses to the incident near Richmond Road reported the hit-and-run collision around 8 a.m.

Witnesses took down the licence plate number of the vehicle as it took off and police located the vehicle at the owner’s home.

Their investigation found that the owner was not driving the car at the time of the incident. Police identified a suspect but couldn’t confirm the person was driving due to a lack of evidence.

The registered owner received a $368 ticket for failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

Police are not aware of any damage other than a flooded backyard.

They said the incident serves as a reminder that owners are responsible for the actions of other drivers who use their vehicles, said police.
