Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 441 and the Saanich school district have agreed to continue contract negotiations with assistance from a mediator.

CUPE 441 represents close to 500 support staff such as education assistants, youth and family counsellors, and custodial staff.

They are in a position to serve 72-hour strike notice after a vote in August.

“While we are disappointed that we have not yet finalized a new contract with our support staff, we are hopeful that this new step will enable that to occur,” district superintendent Dave Eberwein said in a statement.”

He said that no job action is anticipated at this time.

“We will continue to keep you informed of any relevant information that may affect our schools operating as usual,” he said. “In the event job action occurs it may take a variety of forms and may not necessarily result in complete school closure.”
