Now in Grade 12, Glenlyon Norfolk students Anastasia Castro, left, and Char Brady began advocating for regulations to reduce single-use plastics back in Grade 8.

Two Glenlyon-Norfolk School students, a Saanich councillor and a Victoria climate poet are being recognized as some of the country’s top young environmentalists.

The Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 list was released Friday by the advocacy group Starfish Canada.

Grade 12 students Anastasia Castro and Char Brady have campaigned against single-use plastics since they were in Grade 8. Their work, including efforts to end the use of single-use plastic bags, recently earned them B.C.’s Good Citizenship Medal.

Ned Taylor, elected to Saanich council in 2018 at age 19, has also pushed for reductions in single-use products. He backed Saanich’s plastic bag bylaw and urged the CRD to look into a regionwide bylaw to deal with styrofoam cups and containers.

Poet Talen Rimmer, 25, has performed around the city, starting conversations on mental health and how we cope with the climate crisis.
