No one was home when a kitchen fire broke out Tuesday at a Nanaimo home, but firefighters were able to rescue a pair of dogs and a cat.

Nanaimo Deputy Fire Chief Geoff Whiting said crews responded about 2 p.m. to the home on Old Victoria Road, where heavy smoke could be seen.

The person who reported the fire heard barking and thought there could be a dog inside, Whiting said.

“The crews made entry, attacked the fire and rescued three animals from the house, two dogs and one cat.”

The dogs were given CPR and oxygen was provided with special masks that fit over their snouts, Whiting said.

Two veterinarians from a nearby clinic assisted, taking the dogs back to the clinic. The animals are expected to recover, Whiting said.

The cat that was removed from the home did not need attention, while another cat escaped on its own.

In addition to damage to the kitchen area, there was significant smoke damage to the home, Whiting said.
