A tractor-trailer fire this morning on a major commuter road off the highway in Saanich snarled traffic.

A brake malfunction is suspected to have caused the trailer portion of a truck to burst into flames, said Staff Sgt. Marc Chateau.

The incident occurred at 7:06 a.m. when a southbound tractor-trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway turned east onto McKenzie Avenue and caught fire.

The busy intersection is slated for an overpass because of the volume of traffic it receives, especially at morning and nightly rush-hour.

Saanich Fire and Saanich police raced to the scene. The road was blocked off and the fire was suppressed. By 8 a.m. all lanes were open with the exception of some blocked sections.
