An excavator hit a natural gas line Wednesday morning on Tolmie Avenue, leading the Victoria Fire Department to evacuate nearby homes.

Fortis B.C. was at the scene at 1095 Tolmie Ave. to rectify the situation.

The accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. A nearby daycare called the fire department and took the children to a park, where parents arrived to collect them, Platoon Chief Gary Birtwistle said.

Homes in the immediate area were evacuated and the fire department has closed the area to traffic until the matter is resolved.
