The Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre is going to the dogs.

On the evening of Nov. 10, the pool will welcome four-legged furry friends for a swim before the pool is closed for annual maintenance.

The first swim, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., is for small dogs under 25 pounds and medium dogs under 60 pounds. A second swim will be held from 8:15 to 9 p.m. for medium and large dogs weighing more than 60 pounds.

Admission is by donation to the B.C. SPCA and can be either cash or dog supplies.

The person supervising the dog must be 18 years or older, but children are welcome to come and watch the fun.

Only one pet per adult is allowed. Dog owners will not be allowed to swim in the pool. Lifeguards will be on duty, but only for humans who fall into the water.

Pets must be supervised at all times, and organizers emphasize the event is for well-socialized, friendly dogs only. Dangerous, aggressive or unruly dogs are not permitted to take part and will be asked to leave immediately.

Dogs must be spayed or neutered and fully vaccinated. Puppies can participate, but must be four months old and fully vaccinated.

Dog lifejackets will not be provided, but a pooch can bring its own small toy to play with in the water. Pet owners are reminded to bring a towel and a water dish for their animals.

Owners are asked to enter and exit the facility using the back door to the pool. Dogs must wear a collar and should be leashed. The change rooms will be closed during and after the swim.

Space is limited, so dog owners are asked to register in advance by phone or online. Use the code 29635 for small and medium dogs, and 29640 for large dogs. The registration form asks for the dog’s weight and licence number.
