The opening of a new rest area near Sombrio Beach this weekend marks the latest step in a $10-million project to upgrade the Highway 14 corridor linking Langford to Sooke and Port Renfrew.

The rest area at the Sombrio lookout point is set to open Sunday or Monday, depending on the weather.

Premier John Horgan announced the Highway 14 upgrades in January to ease congestion and reduce crashes on a key commuter route through his Langford-Juan de Fuca riding.

Construction crews have completed work on three new bus pull-outs at West Shore Parkway, Laidlaw Road and Harbourview Road and installed new safety signs at Kangaroo Road, Gillespie Road and Parkland Road.

A slow-moving vehicle pullout east of Muir Creek, between Sooke and French Creek, is set for completion later this month.

The new rest area at Sombrio Beach includes wheelchair-accessible washroom facilities and picnic tables, an elevated lookout, new lighting and a paved parking lot.
