Oak Bay police are looking into whether a pair of snow boots was a factor in a minor traffic incident last week on Oak Bay Avenue.

A cyclist was hit from behind by a pickup truck, but was able to ride away.

“When we talked to the driver and the driver’s partner, they were both convinced that he was trying to brake,” said Oak Bay Deputy Police Chief Ray Bernoties. “But he was wearing a pair of large snow boots.

“So in addition to sending the vehicle for inspection to ensure the brakes work, we’re also considering whether the snow boots may have played a role.”

Bernoties said it was possible he was touching both pedals at the same time.

“Obviously we don’t hold the footwear accountable, but we hold the driver accountable.”

The situation is similar to drivers having issues with flip-flops when they operate the pedals, he said.
