Six candidates are running in the Jan. 30 provincial byelection in Nanaimo, which could alter the balance of power in the legislature.

Nominations closed Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Justin Greenwood, interim deputy leader of the B.C. Conservative Party, was the final candidate to announce a bid for the seat.

Other candidates are Michele Ney for the Green Party, Sheila Malcolmson of the NDP, Tony Harris of the B.C. Liberal Party, Libertarian Bill Walker and Robin Richardson of the Vancouver Island Party.

The seat was held by longtime NDP MLA Leonard Krog, who resigned in November after being elected mayor of Nanaimo.

The NDP-Green alliance currently holds a two-seat advantage over the Liberals in the legislature. Should the Liberals win the seat, the count in the house will be 43-43, leaving Speaker Darryl Plecas — who was elected as a Liberal but now sits as an Independent — to cast the deciding vote.

Advance voting will be held from Jan. 22 to Jan. 27. Eligible voters can also cast ballots at the Nanaimo district electoral office from now until 4 p.m. on Jan. 30, or by mail.
