Shawnigan Lake RCMP are asking the public for information as they continue their investigation into the intentional poisoning of about 25 trees on private waterfront property on Mill Bay Road.

The RCMP were called by the property owners, who said the trees had holes drilled into them. They said they believed that a herbicide or poison was put into the holes, killing the trees.

Police think the poisoning happened around March. Their investigation began in May.

“The loss of these trees has negatively impacted the owner of the property,” police said in a statement.

“The property owners now face a significant cost to have trees removed before they fall over and damage neighbouring properties.

“There is also the added environmental impact due the loss of tall, mature trees.”

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514.
